• China's Transit Elevated Bus Debuts at Beijing Intel High Tech Expo

A model of a Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) debuted at the ongoing 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo. TEB is a purely homegrown invention of China. Its passenger compartment rises far above other vehicles on the road, allowing cars to pass underneath, which will largely increase the utilization of road space. "With a carrying capacity of 1,200 people at a time, the TEB has the same functions as the subway while its cost of construction is less than one fifth that of the subway. Its construction can be finished in one year," said Bai Zhiming, engineer in charge of the TEB project. The first test of such bus is planned to start trail operation in Qinhuangdao City, north China's Hebei Province, in the second half of 2016. The expo is held from May 18 to 22. • China: World Class Transport and Sustainable Development

ITDP has promoted bus rapid transit (BRT) in China for nearly a decade, and now works in Guangzhou, Harbin, and Lanzhou. After five years of working on developing BRT in Guangzhou, the first corridor recently opened to international acclaim in February 2010, and already has nearly quadruple the passenger capacity of any other BRT system in Asia. Non-motorized transport initiatives, with a focus most recently on bike sharing and bike network and facility planning, are another key work area for ITDP in China. We are also in contact with major urban planning, design, and engineering firms, as well as government organizations in order to advocate for transit-oriented development and high-quality, pedestrian-oriented urban design. China's economy has been the envy of the world for a decade, but what about its transportation system? With the largest population in the world and growing, maybe we should be looking at its mobility. The economic superpower has built a 21st century road system to keep up with its new appetite for cars. Transportation economist and Vice President of Policy Research at Reason Foundation, Adrian Moore, says that China is using "pricing scientifically" to keep up with the largest car market in the world. He sat down with Reason.tv to talk about what many are calling, "the most important bilateral relationship in the 21st century." Moore has been working with China on free market transportation solutions for booming cities that are attracting hundreds of thousands of people every month. ...

China's economy has been the envy of the world for a decade, but what about its transportation system? The economic superpower has built a 21st century road system to keep up with its new appetite for cars. Transportation economist and Vice President of Policy Research at Reason Foundation, Adrian Moore, says that China is using "pricing scientifically" to keep up with the largest car market in the world. He sat down with Reason.tv to talk about what many are calling, "the most important bilateral relationship in the 21st century." Moore has been working with China on free market transportation solutions for booming cities that are attracting hundreds of thousands of people every month. China's demand for cars is being driven by its new middle class, which is roughly the size of the entire population of the United States. Doing transportation right is something China can't afford to do wrong. Moore explains what it is doing right, wrong and what this "capitalist country" can learn from the "avowedly communist system". Filmed and edited by Sharif Christopher Matar. Approximately 10 minutes.
